HPD arrests man accused of shooting at police officers in Kalihi

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Honolulu police arrested a 47-year-old man accused of shooting at officers in Kalihi early Sunday.
According to HPD Chief Arthur “Joe” Logan in a news conference, officers spotted a Honda CRV commit a traffic violation near Aloha Stadium around 1:30 a.m. Officers determined that the vehicle was stolen from Sandy Beach on Oct. 14.
The vehicle was spotted heading east on Middle Street in Kalihi and turning onto Ahonui Street. Officers stopped the driver near Kuhio Park Terrace.
Before shots rang out, officers could be seen searching the public housing complex around 1 a.m.
According to police, the 47-year-old man driver of the vehicle parked at the property and tried to flee the scene.
The driver fled on foot and fired shots at two officers, Logan said. The officers then shot the suspect multiple times.
The suspect, identified as Blane Apostadiro, was transported to the hospital in serious condition. He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder on a law enforcement officer, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and other offenses, according to a HPD log.
A ghost gun was recovered from the scene.
Police also arrested a 34-year-old female passenger on suspicion of unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle. She has multiple prior convictions, Logan said.
Logan said the two officers who fired their weapons were offered administrative leave as standard department procedure.
When asked if officers had justification in this shooting, he said there is an investigation underway.
“Based on the facts I have right now, it appears that way, yes,” explained Logan.
This is the sixth officer-involved shooting on Oahu, compared to three at the same time last year.
Logan also said the officers were not wearing body cameras because they were part of HPD’s Crime Reduction Unit.
