Historic 194 Year Old Vieux Carre' New Orleans Hand Shaped Roofing Slate.... Condition is "Used". Shipped with USPS
I purchased this slate in the French market in New Orleans in 2002. It was aged roughly around 175 years old then which will bring it to around 194 years old now. The front of the slate has a painting of Pirates Alley which is a small Alley between the St Louis cathedral and the Cabildo which was built under Spanish rule in 1799 as a governor's mansion. It sits next to the St Louis cathedral and is now a historical museum. You usually find street performers and artists lining this alley between the two buildings. Always a must-see when visiting New Orleans.
The back of the slate gives the history of the slates origin which was mined in Pennsylvania and transported down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers on rafts and became the roofing material after the disastrous fire of 1795. Each one was individually hand shaped. this one came from one of the old buildings in the Vieux Curre' area and dates back to the late 1700s and early 1800s.
It is 8 inches tall, 6 inches wide.
It has a leather strap installed for hanging.
She photos of front and back.
I also have a larger one listed which has the St Louis cathedral on the front of it. I bought them together because they have the buildings that sit side by side on each one.
